Is Generative AI a Pandora's Box? Toward the Application of GAI to Support Unity in Diversity in Higher Education

This was a presentation given at the 2024 Nova Southeastern University BEDI Summit
In this 30-minute session, participants will learn about the benefits, challenges, and risks associated with generative AI in higher education. Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) has gained attention in academic circles since the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November 2022. GAI has been the topic of discussion in industry magazines, journal articles, conference presentations, and university task forces. As knowledge and understanding of the effects of GAI on higher education develop, it is important to keep a pulse on its dualistic nature.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Define key terms: artificial intelligence (AI), generative AI, and large language models.
2. Analyze the benefits, challenges, and risks of using generative AI in higher education.
3. Explain the FATE (Fairness, Accountability, Transparency, and Ethics) framework and recognize key thought leaders for exploring generative AI from a BEDI (Belonging, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) perspective.
4. Outline strategies for advancing knowledge and implementation of generative AI initiatives aligned with BEDI principles.
