In this episode of our podcast, Know Your Limits, we address a Healthy People 2030 goal and how it impacts our communities, particularly the young adult population (approximately 18–25 years old). Young adults are often undergoing a period of intense change and uncertainty, which leaves them open to a variety of health problems, regardless of whether they are attending college, entering the workforce, or pursuing other goals. The Healthy People goal SU-13, "Reduce the proportion of people who have had alcohol use disorder in the past year," is the topic of discussion in this episode. We investigate why there may be little to no noticeable movement in the intended direction for this target at the moment by concentrating on subtopics including statistics, underlying causes, and programming/interventions. As we talk about the distinctions between our communities in Broward County, Florida; Miami-Dade County, Florida; Leon County, Florida; and Clark County, Nevada, we share information from peer-reviewed articles, databases, and first-hand accounts. We cover a number of fascinating topics, such as the influence of day-to-day challenges, family and social culture, and narratives of community involvement bringing about the desired change locally.
