This session is intended for teachers and writers interested in how to integrate AI into composing processes in ethical and effective ways. It contrasts HITL (human-in-the-loop) processes and MITL (machine-in-the-loop) processes to consider how we can design human-centered workflows that reduce the risks of using AI both in terms of acceptable output and student learning. It builds on attempts to bring AI into the consultation loop practiced in the NSU Writing and Communication Center, customizing AI as the “third person in the room” that can shape the conversations occurring between consultants and students without merely replacing them. Our goal is for the audience to leave with expanded models of how AI can function within composing processes, and an increased ability to design custom workflows that use it ethically.
